Those of you who have been reading me for a while may have noticed my love for my air force ones. Unfortunately, nothing lasts forever and after years of loyal services, the time to replace them has come.

That’s where the problems begin! AF1’s are not vegan nor sustainable. Maybe one day Nike will make a cruelty-free version of them but we are not there yet and in the meantime, I had to look for an alternative. Initially, I thought about ordering a pair of vegan Stan Smiths but I find having the faces of Stella McCartney and Stan Smith on my feet a little off putting… that, and the hefty price tag. So I kept searching.

I discovered the brand Subtle completely by accident. I was just browsing through my Instagram explorer feed when I saw a tiny picture of what seemed like a very pretty pair of white sneakers. I clicked on the picture and imagine how happy I was when I saw that 1) they had that same chunky look I like so much about AF1s and 2) they were vegan. Had to get me a pair!

Turns out Subtle shoes is a French-Belgian fair & sustainable brand that works with a factory in Portugal. Not fully vegan, but still better than what I first expected. The sneakers themselves are very well crafted, comfortable and seem robust. Time will tell if it’s really the case.

Celles et ceux qui me lisent depuis un moment savent sans doute l’amour que je porte à mes air force ones. Malheureusement, rien n’est éternel et après des années de bons et loyaux services, l’heure est venue de les remplacer.

C’est le début des ennuis! Les AF1 ne sont ni vegan, ni durables. Peut-être qu’un jour Nike se décidera à en faire une version cruelty-free mais on en est loin donc en attendant, j’ai du chercher une alternative. J’ai d’abord songé à commander une paire de Stan Smith vegan mais l’idée d’avoir les visages de Stella McCartney et Stan Smith sur les pieds me rebuttait un peu… ça et leur prix. Donc j’ai continué à chercher.

Je suis tombée sur la marque Subtle par hasard. Je trainais sur la page explorer de mon flux Instagram quand j’ai remarqué la toute petite photo d’une jolie paire de baskets blanches. Je clique et là, imaginez ma joie quand j’ai vu que 1) elles ont le même look chunky que j’adore des AF1 et 2) elles sont vegan. Il m’en fallait une paire!

Il se trouve que Subtle est une marque éthique et durable franco-belge qui travaille avec un atelie au Portugal. Bien que n’étant pas une marque entièrement vegan, c’est mieux que ce à quoi je m’attendais. Les baskets en elles-mêmes sont joliment finies, confortables et ont l’air solide. Seul le temps nous dira si c’est bien le cas.
