Does Nuud work? That’s the first thing I asked myself when I saw an ad pop up in my facebook feed.

I had been searching for a natural deo that works for longer than I can even remember. I may not have a strong body odour, but I have a super developed sense of smell so needless to say I was, more  often than not, very disappointed

But before I answer the big question. Let’s try to understand how it works.

What’s that smell?

Sweat does not smell. It’s the bacteria that live on our skin that do. Or well, it’s the proteins found in your sweat after being broken down by these lovely guests that create the musty scent we’re all familiar with. Wether they’re natural or not, conventional deos work by killing the bacteria that live on our armpits and/or by reducing the amount of sweat and/or masking odours.

The most efficient deos are antiperspirants. The vast majority of them contain aluminum salts. These salts are compounds that are the perfect size to fit in the canal of our sweat glands and block them, therefore preventing sweat from coming out. The higher the concentration in aluminum, the longer the effect. Unfortunately, these nasties have been linked to breast cancer by many studies. So we are left with our other option : killing bacteria. That’s how most natural deodorants work, either by using alcohol, alum stone or plant extracts. On paper, it should work. In real life? Not always. We all have different bodies, sweat more or less, host different species, eat different diets, live in different climates. But in all cases, the bacteria return, and they return fast!

So what’s different with the Nuud deo?

Nuud is a vegan all natural silver based deodorant in the form of a thick cream that you smear all over your pits. It also contains zinc oxide and coconut oil, which happen to also be active against bacteria. The formula is designed to resist showers and guess what? To resist sweat itself. So unlike other natural deos, you don’t need to reapply all the time. In fact, the company even claims you can go several days with one application. That plus a biodegradable packaging and carbon neutral shipping sounded too good to be true, but I had to see for myself.

I placed my order, which took 2 weeks to arrive, and started using it immediately. I expected to stink during the first few days, but I didn’t! The first week, I could smell a little sweat on my fingers if I touched my armpits (glamorous, I know) but nothing I could detect with the good old underarm sniff test. Plus, they were even as dry as when I used antiperspirant. I still need to apply it daily for now, but apparently you need to apply less and less as you use it. Now I’m just curious to see how it will handle warmer temperatures as spring approaches!

Est-ce-que le duo Nuud fonctionne?

C’est la première question que je me suis posée en voyant leur pub facebook.

Ca faisait super longtemps que je cherchais un déodorant naturel, sans succès. J’ai beau ne pas avoir une odeur corporelle très forte, j’ai un odorat très fin donc pas besoin de vous faire un dessin pour vous dire que j’ai été déçue plus d’une fois.

Mais avant de répondre à la grande question, voyons un peu comment tout cela fonctionne.

C’est quoi cette odeur?

La transpiration ne sent pas mauvais. Ce sont les bactéries qui vivent sur notre peau. Ou plutôt,  ce sont les protéines présentes dans la sueur après avoir été dégradées par nos chères invitées qui créent cette odeur musquée qu’on connait tous. Qu’ils soient naturels ou non, les déos traditionnels agissent en tuant ces bactéries et/ou en bloquant l’arrivée de la sueur et/ou en masquant les odeurs.

Les déodorants les plus efficaces sont les anti-transpirants. La grande majorité d’entre eux contient des sels d’aluminium. Ces sels on la taille idéale pour se loger dans les canaux de nos glandes sudoripares, bloquant ainsi l’évacuation de la sueur. Plus leur concentration en aluminium est élevée, plus ils sont efficaces sur la durée. Malheureusement on a découvert que ces saletés étaient cancérigènes par plusieurs études. Donc on se retrouve coincés avec notre seconde option: tuer de la bactérie. C’est ce que font la plupart des déos naturels soit gr°ace à de l’alcool, de la bière d’alun ou des extraits végétaux. En théorie, ça devrait fonctionner. En réalité, nous avons tous un corps différent, qui transpire plus ou moins, abritons des espèces différentes, mangeons différemment et vivons sous différents climats. Dans tous les cas, les bactéries reviennent, et elles reviennent vite!

Qu’est-ce-qui change donc avec le deo Nuud?

Nuud est un déodorant naturel et vegan à base d’argent sous forme d’une crème épaisse à appliquer sur nos aisselles. Il contient aussi de l’oxyde de zinc et de l’huile do coco qui sont également actifs contre les bactéries. Sa formules est connue pour resister aux douches et devinez quoi? A la transpiration elle-même! Donc contrairement aux autres des naturels, pas besoin d’en remettre sans arrêt. D’ailleurs, ses créateurs disent même qu’une seule application peut suffire pour plusieurs jours. Tout ça plus un emballage biodégradable et une livraison neutre en carbone m’a paru trop beau pour être vrai mais je devais faire le test par moi même.

J’ai donc passé ma commande, que j’ai reçue sous deux semaines, et ai commencé à l’utiliser immédiatement. Je m’attendais à puer pendant les premiers jours, mais ça n’a pas été le cas! La première semaine, j pouvais sentir une légère odeur de transpiration si je passais le doigt sur mon aisselle (glamour, je sais) mais rien que j’aurais pu détecter avec un bon vieux sniffage d’aisselle. En plus, elles étaient aussi sèches que si j’avais mis un anti-transpirant. J’ai toujours besoin d’en mettre tous les jours pour le moment mais apparement, la dose diminue au fil de son utilisation. Donc là je suis juste curieuse de voir ce que ça va donner avec les beaux jours qui approchent!
